Transform your Mother’s Day this year

Sharing is caring!

We’re going to transform your Mother’s Day this year.

You’ve been on my heart. How are you feeling? What is this day bringing up for you? Do you feel a tightness in your chest when you think about it? Are you anxiously hoping that the day will speed by so you can get back to normal life?

Does this day always hurt your heart when you see it on the calendar?

There doesn’t seem to be a day that elicits as many emotions and as wide a range of emotions as Mother’s Day.

This year, let’s focus on transforming your Mother’s Day by being a mothering yourself well.

Let’s explore

Find a piece of paper and a pen for this journaling exercise. Close your eyes for a minute and check in with yourself. You’re going to take some time to find out what your heart is asking for this Mother’s Day. Sit in silence for a moment before you answer these questions. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you remain open and curious. It can be tempting to shut down and become skeptical. If you do, then this Mother’s Day will be the same as all the rest. We’re doing something different this year. This year, you’re going to focus on mothering yourself. You are showing grace and kindness to yourself this year. You are asking yourself what you need this Sunday.

  • When I think about Mother’s Day, what are the feelings that come to mind and where do I feel those in my body?
  • As I focus in on my heart, what is it asking of me this year? Is it asking for more rest, joy or beauty? Does it need adventure or silence? What would calm the anxious spaces of my heart?
  • How can I offer comfort to myself this year? How can I offer myself grace?
  • What are three things that I can do this year that would put a smile on my face?
  • What do I need from myself that honors my own humanity and who I am as a woman, as a child of God? I was ‘me’ first, before becoming a mom. How can I celebrate the fact that I get to be me?
  • What did I enjoy doing as a child or a teenager? How can I incorporate some of those elements into Mother’s Day?
  • What is one thing that I will do to make this day special for myself this year and celebrate my role as a mom?

Your circumstances may not change, but your experience will

The circumstance of your Mother’s Day will be what they are, but your thoughts around this day will dramatically change your experience of it. For example, consider what happens inside you when you have the thought, “I hate Mother’s Day. No one cares about me.” Now change that thought to; “I will enjoy my Mother’s Day and care for myself well.” Do you see how something inside you shifts as you think each thought?

You are the only one who has the power to make this a joyful Mother’s Day or a miserable one.

You are the only one who has the power to make this a joyful Mother’s Day or a miserable one. There is always grace and hope to be found even in the worst circumstances. Your circumstances are real, and your suffering is real. This is not toxic positivity where we pretend like everything is fine. This is a day to acknowledge and care for you, a day to mother yourself well and to treat yourself with grace and kindness. Your role is vital to your family and caring for you is an act of love toward them as well. You are interconnected with your family and your state of being impacts them.

You’ve got this, my friend. You can have the kind of Mother’s Day that you’re looking for. It doesn’t even have to be a joyful one. If you need a good cry, then find a quiet spot to park and have a good cry. Let it all out. Do you need a good fast walk to process through some anger? Take a couple of hours for a vigorous hike. What do you need from yourself this year? You give to everyone else all year round, so take time to think about what YOU need.
